Health Advantages Of Kombucha Tea As The Trend Grows

Have you seen the most recent adoption of kombucha in the past few months. Its getting a lot of momentum from the general public, especially when celebrities like Barbara Streisand, and Halle Berry, are seen toting a bottle of kombucha while they’re on a shopping spree in New York, Dubai or Las Vegas.

Kombucha wasnt always popular like it is these days. Sure, its now becoming the sensational thing to chug to be cool, but there was an era, before it was produced by big names and stocked at your local health food store. There never were 8 different brands and brews to choose from. I recently counted 10 different versions at my neighborhood Whole Foods.

Of all these kombucha drinks, I have to say that my favorite, store-bought brand, is by far the GTCs Synergy batch. Their GingerBerry is to live for! Ive tasted almost every version on the market, or at least every kind Ive ever seen. Additionally, Im a fan of ginger ale of any variety, except the Schweppes brand. That junk is nothing more than cola in my professional opinion. Give me a real-deal ginger brew anytime! That being said, you simply must experience the GingerBerry from GTC.

When my Mother started making and enjoying her own kombucha, it was in the late 70s and she has had the same culture the entire time. Several years later, when I was just a child, it seemed bazaar and sometimes humiliating to have my peers see a gallon jar standing in the kitchen. It looked like a science class. That large, gallon jar fermenting a dark juice.

As a youngster, Ive even mistaken kombucha for cold ice tea in the fridge as she always kept her kombucha tea in a fancy glass pouring-pitcher. As a 13 year-old, after working up a sweat, playing in the neighborhood, Id head inside with a peer needing to be re-hydrated. Reaching a few huge chugs of kombucha tea when your mouth were expecting iced tea can really catch you off guard.

Now I should tell you that my house never, ever stocked Gatorade or Sprite, etc. Rather, on demand, we stocked plenty of orange juice from concentrate, always mixed, and the other option was H2O, unsweetened tea or kombucha.

Cool people drink it because its yummy. And so do you. While famous people make a lot of dough and can easily afford the $4 per bottle that it costs here in Seattle. Me, Id prefer to make it in my home in small batches, for a mere fraction of the cost. And for a newby, there are endless websites that distribute free instructions for brewing this truly amazing tonic.

Most of us average people sip on kombucha for its health advantages. The list of healthy stories is extremely long and includes things like aiding digestion, increasing immune system response, strengthening the bodys blood system, reversing depression, spiking mental awareness, and the list is ongoing. I prefer to drink it for the clarity of thought it provides for me. Ive even replaced my morning cup of coffee with a travel-mug of chilled, semi-sweetened kombucha tea.

If you prefer feeling great, I suggest trying this wonder drink. Afterall, it cant hurt. But remember that if you suffer from life threatening illness, you should always talk to a health care provider. And let him or her know that youre drinking kombucha. Find out what he or she say about it.

So, dont forget that you need not be a heart-throb with mega-money to thoroughly enjoy kombucha. All you need are some simple supplies, a fair amount of desire, and a scoby. You also can maintain a limitless stock of kombucha tea. Here is a breakdown of exactly what youll need to drink like a star.

Stainless steel, glass or lead-free ceramic pot (such as Corningware) to boil water
Glass jar to accommodate the amount of Kombucha you want to make
Metal or wood long handled spoon for stirring
Measuring cup
Porous cloth, paper towel or paper coffee filter
Tea
Kombucha scoby

Healthy Lungs Love Green Vegetables Here’s Why!

Just like breathing, it’s easy to take your lungs for granted.

It doesn’t matter that they’re your heart’s best friend . . . or that they are a major part of your immune system . . .

We tend not to think about these two air sacs that bring in all the oxygen we need to keep going.

Let’s change that . . . starting with how we eat.

Your lungs are two reasons to eat more greens. Here’s why:

How Broccoli Gives You Healthy Lungs

You’ve heard it from your mom and now I’m saying it, too . . .

Eat your broccoli . . . as well as your kale, cauliflower, cabbage and kohlrabi . . .

Clinical research shows that eating these vegetables raw can reduce your risk for lung cancer by as much as 55% if you’re a smoker.[2]

These vegetables – all in the cruciferous family – contain special sulfur-based compounds that have been shown to be potent cancer-fighters. These compounds – sulforaphane and erucin – seem to help detoxify carcinogens as well as activate tumor-suppressing genes.[3]

But here’s the thing . . . you won’t get this protection as much if you go for a supplement instead of the real thing. Supplements don’t give you myrosinase, the enzyme your body uses to break these special compounds down and make these compounds bioavailable.

Vitamin A-Rich Greens Like Chlorella Give Lungs A Boost

You may have heard from your doctor that you shouldn’t take vitamin A or beta-carotene supplements if you’re a smoker. Several studies have shown these supplements can increase smokers’ risk for lung cancer.

But what many conventional doctors and researchers overlook is that the results are just the opposite when you get vitamin A and its natural precursor, beta-carotene, from food. Study after study has shown that people who eat the most beta-carotene-rich vegetables and have the highest blood levels of beta-carotene have the lowest risk for lung cancer.[4]

What kinds of veggies give you this golden, protective nutrient? Leafy greens like kale, spinach and collards as well as orange vegetables like carrots and squash. The superfood, chlorella offers your body a rich supply of beta-carotene and vitamin A. And since chlorella is a whole food, you know you’re getting the healthy form of these nutrients.

Chlorella also does two other things to help your lungs:

Chlorella helps your body speed toxins out of it. When we breathe in, we bring in all kinds of pollutants into our body. Smoking, in particular, exposes the body to the toxic heavy metal, cadmium. Studies have shown chlorella can help speed cadmium out of the body at 7 times the normal rate.[5] The fiber in chlorella and other veggies and fruits may help calm your immune system. According to preliminary studies, lung health may be heavily impacted by the health of your gut bacteria. These bacteria support proper immune functioning, helping to prevent allergic reactions that can contribute to problems like asthma. Fiber-rich foods – prebiotics – nourish these bacteria like nothing else. It may be that eating to support these bacteria can do enormous good for your lungs as well.[6]

Eat Healthy Greens And Enjoy Healthy Lungs

By eating strategically, you can nourish your whole body. But specifically, you can help your lungs stay strong.

And when your lungs are working well, every breath fills your body with energizing oxygen. So your body can perform at its best.

Healthy Eating for Kids Made Easy

Healthy eating for kids doesnt have to be difficult. All you really need to do is find better alternatives to the junk food that they see advertised everywhere they look. Children need good nutrition to grow up healthy and strong. A steady diet of junk food will not provide them with the nutrition they need.

The first step to healthy eating for kids is to have lots of good tasting, healthy food for them to eat at home. Make it easy for them to choose healthy food at home. Stop buying all the over processed, sugar and salt laden snacks and replace them with healthy choices like apples and bananas, low-fat yogurt, or celery with peanut butter. Carrots sticks and colorful sliced peppers with a little low-fat ranch dressing are easy to prepare and have ready to go in the fridge. Whole grain crackers and cheese or whole grain baked crisps are a far better choice than potato chips and other fried snacks. Switch your bread and cereals to whole grain products. Children should have 4-6 servings of whole grains per day and bread and cereal are good ways to get them. Sugary drinks should be saved for special occasions. Children should drink low-fat milk and lots of water. The sooner you start the program of healthy eating for kids the sooner they will learn lifelong habits of healthy eating.

Family meals are an important part of healthy eating for kids. They are a comforting ritual for both parents and kids. It is a good time to get caught up on how every ones day went and introduce kids to new foods. Its also a good time for parents to be good role models and eat healthy food too. Try to have dinner at approximately the same time each day so kids wont snack too late in the afternoon. Breakfast is a good time for a family meal as well. Its the most important meal of the day and children who eat a healthy breakfast trend to do better in school.

Youre not going to be able to eliminate junk food from your childrens diet altogether. The aim is to have them in the habit of reaching for healthy foods because it the normal thing for them to do. If you establish good eating habits for your family you will be well on your way to healthy eating for your kids.

Health Benefits of Decaf Coffee

Possible Health Benefits of Drinking Decaf Coffee
Weve noticed a definite shift towards decaf coffee in the last year or two as consumers are increasingly looking for healthier versions of their favourite foods and drinks. Of course its nothing new, decaffeinated coffee has been around for decades, but now youll see it right at the top of the drinks list at pretty much any coffee shop you care to visit.

So are there real health benefits to drinking decaf? There are many studies published that say there are definite and measurable benefits, so we took at a look at one of the more prominent pieces of research. Studies conducted by Dr. Giulio Maria Pasinetti, professor of neurology and psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City concentrated on how decaf coffee could potentially be used to treat or even prevent mental decline.

Coffee beans contain a number of different substances that contribute to its taste and aroma, some of which his team tested to determine if there were any identifiable positive health benefits. Caffeic acid, a phenol based chemical, has in particular been found to contain elements that have both anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties. Coffee also contains a substance called chlorogenic acid, which has already been proven to help minimise glucose production in the liver, which in turn prevents hyperglycemic peak after ingesting food and drinks with high sugar content.

So if coffee contains all of these positive elements, why is decaf the preferred healthy option? Its simply because the caffeine present in coffee still poses a small potential risk of triggering heart diseases. Once removed, the full health benefits of coffee become more viable. Dr Pasinettis study also revealed that decaffeinated coffee can enhance the metabolism of sugar and help convert it to energy. This is particularly interesting because type 2 diabetes can lead to mental decline due to reduced sugar metabolism in the brain. Therefore, there is a strong and well published link between decaf coffee and the prevention of mental decline caused by diabetes and Alzheimers disease.

To be clear, the health benefits go beyond the absence of caffeine in decaf. The actual decaffeination process itself leaves behind a substance called cafestrol, which has been shown to enhance the bodys production of bile acid, as well as having anti inflammatory properties that are particularly beneficial to the brain. The process of decaffeination, however, does not reduce the level of antioxidants present in coffee.

So there are very few reasons to avoid decaf unless you particularly need it to kick start your day or keep you awake on a long drive. If youre drinking coffee purely for the taste, then its definitely worth considering. Gone are the days when decaf had a nasty aftertaste or was viewed as somehow inferior to standard coffee. Sure, its a little more expensive, but this is simply due to the cost of processing it.
In summary, Dr Pasinettis studies confirmed the findings from many other similar pieces of work, namely:

Decaf coffee can reduce the risk of developing diabetes
The anti-oxidant properties of decaf coffee can protect the cells from damage that can lead to diabetes. The decaf process doesnt remove the chlorogenic acid content which is responsible for regulating blood glucose levels.
Cancer prevention
Decaffeinate coffee still contains high levels of the anti-oxidants that can prevent conditions associated with both the aging process and a number of cancers. A number of studies agree that regular drinkers of decaf display a reduced risk of developing colon cancer. For women, there is also a corresponding reduction in the risk of breast cancer.
Decreased risk of heart problems.
As mentioned, caffeine has been linked to number of heart conditions including irregular palpitations, heart attacks and strokes. The removal of the caffeine (without reducing the levels of antioxidants) can help reduce the risk of developing a wide variety of heart conditions.
Prevention of mental decline due to age and Alzheimer’s.

The polyphenols found in coffee beans are still present after the decaffeination process, these being the substances responsible for increasing cognitive abilities with the brain, thus further improving memory.

As weve said, weve used one study as an example, and there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that the benefits are real. This information is intended to be read in association with other studies and is not the results of any work carried out by us.
Have a look at the decaffeinated coffees now available and ask yourself if there is any good reason not to switch. If you can contribute any more to this, please feel free to email us.

Boost Your Health And Fight Disease With Taxifolin

Taxifolin (also known as dihydroquercetin) is a flavonoid (health boosting chemical compounds that can be found in plants) that can fight cancer, treat diabetes and much more. In this article I will be providing a full breakdown of taxifolin, its main health benefits, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) and the best food sources.

1) DISCOVERY:

Taxifolin and the other flavonoids were discovered by the Hungarian biochemist Albert Szent-Gyorgyi in 1938. When he first made this discovery, Albert Szent-Gyorgyi believed he had discovered a new vitamin and gave the flavonoids the name vitamin P. However, further research revealed that humans could survive without flavonoids so they are not technically vitamins.

2) HEALTH BENEFITS:

Taxifolin has numerous health benefits in the human body. Like many flavonoids, it is a powerful antioxidant (a substance that can protect the body’s cells from the damaging free radicals which are released during oxygen related reactions). It is also an antihistamine (a substance that fights the negative effects of histamine and reduces allergic symptoms) and anti-inflammatory (a substance that prevents unnecessary inflammation within the body).

Another key benefit of taxifolin is its ability to fight disease. This powerful flavonoid can prevent cancer (a disease where the cells in your body start to grow in a rapid, out of control way), type 2 diabetes (a disease where your blood glucose levels become extremely high) and heart disease. Additionally, it can help treat mental disorders by improving memory and reducing the negative symptoms associated with brain diseases.

Taxifolin is also a very important nutrient for your blood. This flavonoid improves circulation, prevents atherosclerosis (a condition where hard plaques form in the artery walls and restrict the flow of blood), reduces blood levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (a type of cholesterol that causes blockages in the artery walls and ultimately increases your heart disease risk) and reduces high blood pressure.

3) RDA:

Taxifolin is not classed as an essential nutrient so no official RDA has been established. However, the available research suggests that consuming between 50 milligrams (mg) and 1,000mg of this flavonoid each day will allow you to enjoy all the health benefits listed above.

4) FOOD SOURCES:

Milk thistle and red onions are both believed to be very good food sources of taxifolin. However, the exact amounts of taxifolin that these foods contain is not known. Taxifolin can also be sourced from concentrated supplements, acai palm and Siberian larch trees.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Universal Health Care

What will universal health care cost us and what will be get from it?

The costs of the new health insurance and health care system will include increased taxes. In some ways, it won’t matter who pays those taxes. If they are paid by corporations, they will raise the price tags of the goods and services they sell, so the individuals will be hurt as well. If they are paid by the consumer, then the consumer will have less to pay for goods and services, so the corporations will be hurt as well.

When we look at the cost of any socialized medicine proposal, we should also look at the price of the existing health care system to make comparisons. In today’s medical system, those of us who can pay for national health care subsidize those who can’t or won’t. The exact amount is uncertain, but your health insurance premiums are higher because your provider has to raise the rates for those who do pay to make up for those who don’t pay.

The costs of our existing health insurance and health care system include the cost of lower productivity when a worker is unable to work because of a medical condition he or she can’t afford to treat. The costs of our present system include the costs associated with more children growing up without a father of mother.

One of the benefits or the present day system is our familiarity with it. It’s like an old car that has a broken driver’s door and a big gash in the passenger seat. We’ve gotten used to getting in the car from the passenger side and having a blanket over the gash in the seat. Another car will have problems as well. The car may be better or worse. That part is unknown. What is known is that the car will be unfamiliar and buying a car is a big commitment.

Once we make major changes to our health care system we will be unlikely to go back to the old medical system. Even if the new system is decidedly worse, we will be stuck with it. We may have higher price tags or worse care. We may be able to tweak the new system and fix it or we may determine that the infrastructure is so poor that it too requires an overhaul.

National health care has the potential of boosting our economy. Many people who are currently shackled to their employers because of the fear of losing their health insurance, may be able to move on to better jobs or start companies and hire others.

Under the present day medical system many people are unable to pay for preventative care. They often wind up in the hospital and get expensive surgeries that they can’t afford to pay for. These surgeries may extend their lives, but may or may not allow them to work again. An individual who gets medical care when the problem is a small one may be able to work and pay taxes much longer than the individual who only gets care when the situation is critical.

We should strive to create a system that keeps our workers working longer and our parents parenting longer.

Although we may have a health care system that is broken, there is no guarantee that a new health insurance and health care system will be any better. However, far too many people are hurt by the present day health insurance and health care system for us to just throw up our hands and do nothing. If we can ignore the rhetoric and focus on the facts a better medical system can be created that will not only benefit the uninsured, but will make us all stronger.
